What the Mark II actually changes
Two things, and only two things, are meaningfully different from the original Origin. Celestron's own Origin product page lays it out if you read carefully, and independent breakdowns like PicStop's Origin vs Origin Mark II write-up confirm the same short list.
First, the camera. The original Origin shipped with a smaller Sony sensor; the Mark II replaces it with the Origin 678C, built around Sony's IMX678 STARVIS 2 CMOS at 8.4 megapixels and roughly 2.0 µm pixels. That's a finer sampling of the RASA's focal plane and a modest sensitivity gain in low-light broadband work. It is a real upgrade, but it's an incremental one — the RASA optics were already the star of the platform.
Second, the base. Celestron cites a stiffer structural base than the original — reducing flexure at high altitudes with the dew shield and accessories loaded. We haven't independently measured this against a Mark I side-by-side, so hedge the exact figure; owners who reported the original's base flex should notice an improvement here.

Some sources publish slightly different native field-of-view figures depending on whether they're quoting the sensor diagonal or the well-corrected image circle — the effective FOV is genuinely wide by smart-telescope standards, but we haven't independently pinned an exact arcminute number from a current Celestron datasheet, so treat any specific claim you see elsewhere with a bit of skepticism.
Image quality — what to actually expect
An f/2.2 RASA at 152 mm is in a different league from the rest of the smart-telescope market for one specific reason: speed. The Vespera 3 is 50 mm f/4.9, the Dwarf 3 is 35 mm f/4.3, the Seestar S30 Pro is 30 mm f/5. At the sensor plane, the Origin Mark II gathers photons roughly four to eight times faster than any of those, depending on the comparison. In practice: a target that needs 45 minutes of integration on a Vespera 3 to pull dust structure out of the noise needs closer to 10-15 minutes on the Origin. That's the argument for the RASA.
Where that speed shows up first is on faint broadband targets. Galaxy outer halos, faint reflection nebulae, and dim dust lanes come out of the noise in a fraction of the time. On narrow, bright targets like the Ring Nebula (M57), the difference is smaller — you're already photon-rich after a few minutes. The Origin is not eight times better than a Vespera 3 on M57; it's meaningfully better on the Andromeda Galaxy outskirts, on faint galaxy groups, and on subtle nebulosity around bright stars.
Three caveats before the aperture argument becomes a purchase argument.
First, sensor and processing matter as much as raw light gathering at this scale. The IMX678 is a competent modern sensor, but the Vaonis Vespera 3 uses a similarly modern Sony chip and Vaonis's Singularity processing is more mature than Celestron's app. Independent tests show the Origin's raw data has more headroom, but its default JPEGs are not always the best-processed images in a category shootout — the ceiling is higher, the floor is not always.
Second, the field of view is wide but not infinite. The RASA design is edge-to-edge sharp across a genuinely wide field, but it's still tighter than what a 50 mm all-in-one covers per frame. Wide targets like the North America Nebula complex still benefit from mosaic mode on the Origin, though at f/2.2 each mosaic tile takes less time. Third, portability is not a feature. A ~19 kg full system with a real tripod is not what you carry to a friend's driveway; it's what you set up in the yard, on a patio, or in a permanent pier. If your imaging life happens on the move, this is the wrong scope regardless of image quality.
Where the RASA design actually helps
The Origin Mark II is the only mainstream smart telescope with a Schmidt astrograph. That matters most in three specific cases:
Faint broadband deep-sky work. Long-exposure work on dim galaxies, integrated flux nebulae, and galactic cirrus is where f/2.2 pays off hard. If most of your target list is "the faint stuff nobody else's smart telescope can pull out," this is the scope.
Fixed installations. On a permanent pier or a semi-permanent patio setup, the Origin's setup penalty disappears and you get to use its integration speed every clear night without hauling it anywhere. That's genuinely a different mode of ownership than the carry-and-go all-in-ones.
