The premise, honestly
These are not competitors in the way the Seestar S30 Pro and Dwarf 3 are competitors. Those two scopes fight over the same buyer at a $150 price gap. The Origin and Vespera 3 fight over adjacent buyers — someone shopping the top of the market for slightly different reasons. One wants a fixed 6-inch aperture in the backyard. The other wants a portable 50 mm apochromat that also happens to be the most polished smart-scope experience shipping today. Ranking one "better than" the other is the wrong frame. What you need is the one whose tradeoffs match your setup.
What they have in common
Before the differences: both are all-in-one, no-computer-required smart telescopes with modern Sony Starvis-2 sensors, active cooling or anti-fog systems, app-driven live-stacking, and no polar alignment. Both output raw FITS or TIFF files you can reprocess in Siril or PixInsight. Both are targeting the buyer who wants real astrophotography without a NINA laptop, a wedge, and a pier — and both cost enough to make you want that. Neither exposes a full ASCOM/NINA control path today; if that matters, you're shopping the wrong tier.

Three specs move the needle here more than any of the others.
Aperture and focal ratio. The Origin's 6-inch f/2.2 RASA collects roughly 9× more light per unit time than the Vespera 3's 50 mm f/4.9 optic. On broadband targets — galaxies, star clusters, reflection nebulae — that's the difference between a bright, low-noise 30-minute stack and a much longer session for the same result. It's the biggest technical advantage the Origin has, and it's what you're paying for.
Field of view. The Vespera 3's shorter focal length and smaller optic yield a wider frame per sub. That matters for showpiece wide-field targets like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), the North America Nebula, or the Pleiades in context. The Origin can cover these with mosaic mode, but the Vespera 3 fits them in a single frame. If your target list runs to big diffuse objects, that matters more than aperture on paper.
Weight and portability. The Origin is 18.9 kg. That's a permanent-installation weight, not a "throw it in the trunk and drive to a dark-sky site" weight. The Vespera 3 with its aluminum tripod goes anywhere. If your realistic viewing life involves any travel, the Origin is off the table before you even open the specs.
What the extra $1,809 actually buys
Set aside the wider FOV and the tripod for a moment. The Origin's premium over the Vespera 3 buys you three things: raw light-collecting area (the 6-inch RASA), a proven mount platform (the NexStar Evolution, which is what serious visual observers have been using for years anyway), and the ability to keep imaging deeper into low-signal targets without adding hours of integration to compensate for a smaller optic. What it does not buy: a nicer app, a better all-in-one experience, or easier deployment. The Vespera 3's Singularity app is the polished one, and the Origin's app has historically been the weakest part of the package — Mark II improved it but not to Vaonis levels.
What the Vespera 3 saves you $1,809 for
The obvious answer is "the money," but the more useful answer is what the Vespera 3 lets you do that the Origin doesn't: pack up on a Friday afternoon, drive two hours to a Bortle 3 site, and image the Veil Nebula from a picnic table. The RASA argument
The 6-inch Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph is genuinely a premium optical design — it's what serious astrophotographers have been buying as a bare tube for years to bolt onto their own mounts. Celestron's move to package it as a self-driving smart telescope is the interesting product decision the Origin represents. If you value that optic specifically, the Origin is the only way to get it in a smart-scope form factor. Nobody else is shipping a 6-inch f/2.2 in this category and probably won't for a while.
The caveat: the Origin's built-in Sony IMX678 sensor has a diagonal of about 8.86 mm, and the 6-inch RASA can illuminate a sensor up to 22 mm. That means the optic is genuinely capable of more than the current sensor can capture. On paper that's headroom; in practice it means you're paying for a lens that could feed a bigger sensor than Celestron chose to install. Whether that matters to you depends on whether a Mark III with a larger chip would tempt you into buying again in two years.
The Vespera 3 argument
The Vespera 3 isn't trying to be the deepest scope. It's trying to be the easiest premium scope — and it succeeds. The new quadruplet apochromatic optics deliver edge-to-edge sharpness that beats the outgoing Vespera II, the internal baffles cut stray light before it hits the sensor, and the Singularity app is genuinely a better experience than any competing smart-scope app on the market. It's also the only one of these two you can bring to a dark-sky trip without renting a truck. Vaonis's five-year warranty on the Vespera 3 is unusual in the category and worth reading — most premium smart scopes ship with one to two years.
Who should buy which
Buy the Celestron Origin Mark II if you have a permanent backyard observing spot, prioritize raw aperture over app polish, and want the largest optic in the smart-telescope category. It's also the pick if you're already invested in Celestron's NexStar Evolution mount ecosystem, or if you plan to bolt on a larger third-party sensor later. Deep-sky enthusiasts working from a fixed suburban site who want the shortest per-target integration time will find the RASA's f/2.2 aperture hard to beat.

The alternative neither of these is
Before you buy either one, look one tier up. The Unistellar Odyssey Pro at $4,599 is priced within a few hundred dollars of the Origin Mark II and takes a completely different design approach — an 85 mm Newtonian with a Nikon OLED electronic eyepiece and Unistellar's citizen-science network. Bottom line
The Vespera 3 is the safer purchase for most buyers at this tier — portable, polished, and $1,809 cheaper. The Origin Mark II is the right purchase for the specific buyer who has a permanent home for it and values aperture above everything else. Neither one is a bad scope, and neither one is a wrong pick if the tradeoff matches your setup. What would be wrong is buying the Origin and then discovering you needed portability, or buying the Vespera 3 and then wishing you had another 100 mm of aperture. Answer that question first.
