What's new versus the Vespera II

Three things, according to Vaonis: a redesigned quadruplet apochromatic optical formula (Petzval-inspired, with two ED glass elements), new internal optical baffles that block stray light before it reaches the sensor, and hardware upgrades — a high-speed USB-C port at 30 MB/s, a built-in hygrometer that drives the anti-fog system automatically, and 115 GB of internal storage. Battery life is now spec'd at 11 hours, mosaic mode maxes out at 24 megapixels, and there's a five-year warranty. That last one is unusual in this category and worth actually reading — most smart scopes ship with one to two years.

The optical design change is the one that matters for image quality. The new quadruplet is supposed to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness with less chromatic aberration than the Vespera II's triplet, and independent coverage on Space.com treats it as a real step forward rather than a minor refresh. Whether the improvement is visible in your images depends on your target — bright emission nebulae look about the same across generations because the sensor is doing most of the heavy lifting, but dense star fields and rich broadband targets (open clusters, galaxy edges, reflection nebulae) are where the new optics earn their name.

Image quality — what you can actually expect

The IMX585 is the same sensor used in the Seestar S30 Pro and several other 2026 smart scopes, so what changes across products at this sensor level is optics and processing. The Vespera 3's 50 mm f/4.9 refractor with the new quadruplet delivers a native 2.5° × 1.4° rectangular field of view, which is wider than the Seestar S30 Pro's 4.6° circular field in one dimension and narrower in the other. Practically, this means large targets like the Cygnus Wall, the North America Nebula, or the Andromeda Galaxy fit better in a single frame — or a small mosaic — than they do on a round-FOV scope. That's the pitch, and it holds up.

Where the Vespera 3 falls short of the pitch: any smart telescope this size is still a small refractor, and no amount of quadruplet optics changes the physics of a 50 mm aperture. Faint galaxies past magnitude ~10, small planetary nebulae like the Ring (M57), and dense globular clusters all still require the same 60-90+ minutes of stacking to look good that they've always required. The Vespera 3 doesn't make faint targets brighter, it just makes each stacked frame cleaner and every star closer to a real point of light.

City-sky performance is genuinely improved by the new internal baffling — first-light images from owners in Bortle 6-7 posted to the Vaonis site show noticeably less halo bloom around bright stars than comparable Vespera II shots. But this is the improvement of "somewhat useful in a light-polluted yard" not "great in a light-polluted yard." If you live somewhere heavily light-polluted, budget for the Cosmic Filters bundle (Vaonis's own CLS light-pollution and dual-band H-alpha/OIII filters) at €628 — plan on that being a real add-on, not optional.

The Singularity app experience

This is where the Vespera 3 either wins you over or loses you. Vaonis's Singularity app is the polish argument for the whole product line: a target library, automatic plate-solve and go-to, integrated live stacking, in-app Sky Color post-processing (color balance and contrast), a 15-slot multi-night mode that lets you continue integrating on the same target across separate nights, and the LumENS AI companion that answers questions about what you're observing in natural language.

The tradeoff is closure. Unlike the Seestar and Dwarf ecosystems, Vaonis does not currently expose ASCOM Alpaca, an open API, or third-party software support. If you want to drive the scope from NINA, do your own guiding, or plug it into anything outside Singularity, you can't. What you get in return is the least fiddly setup in the smart-scope market — power on, tap a target, walk away for 90 minutes — and a first-run experience that's genuinely designed for people who don't want to become amateur imaging engineers.

The FITS output is where the closure loosens up. Every unit-image frame is saved as 16-bit FITS internally, and you can pull them off the scope via USB-C at 30 MB/s and reprocess them yourself in Siril or GraXpert. The pre-stacked TIFFs also transfer cleanly. So even though you can't control the scope from third-party software, you can still get at your data — an important distinction that Vaonis handled well.

Every night is different and the app handles a lot of this automatically, but these are sensible starting points on the Vespera 3's optics and IMX585 sensor. The general rule with the built-in filters: use dual-band on emission nebulae, CLS (light pollution) on broadband targets from city skies, and no filter under dark skies whenever you can get away with it.

The single most common mistake on the Vespera 3, per Vaonis owner forums, is running the dual-band filter on reflection nebulae (M45, NGC 7023) or broadband galaxies. The dual-band filter cuts almost everything except H-alpha and OIII, and reflection nebulae emit neither — the result is a nearly-black frame. Who should buy it

Buy the Vespera 3 if you want the smoothest, most hands-off smart-scope experience shipping in 2026 and you're not price-sensitive at the $2,000+ tier. Buy it if you already own an older Vespera and the new optics and baffling are enough to justify the upgrade — most Vespera II owners we've read on Cloudy Nights are saying "wait for a firmware improvement to the II first" rather than trading up, so this is not an obvious upgrade path if you already have the previous generation.

Buy the Vespera Pro 2 instead if you routinely run multi-hour or multi-night integration sessions on faint targets — the extra $500 gets you optical headroom you'll actually see on long stacks. Buy the Seestar S30 Pro or the Dwarf 3 instead if you want ASCOM Alpaca support, plan to reprocess FITS aggressively, or care about weight and portability more than app polish — both are a fifth of the price and capture most of the same targets in more integration time.
