Unistellar sells two versions of the same telescope. The Odyssey and the Odyssey Pro share identical 85 mm f/3.9 optics, the same sensor, the same tracking hardware, and the same Unistellar app. What you're paying extra for on the Pro is one thing and one thing only: a Nikon-designed OLED electronic eyepiece bolted to the side of the body. That's it. Every other spec on Unistellar's own compare page is the same. The real question isn't which is technically better — they're the same telescope — it's whether the eyepiece is worth the very substantial price gap.
What they share (which is everything except the eyepiece)
Both scopes use the same optical assembly: 85 mm aperture, 320 mm focal length, f/3.9. Both use the same imaging sensor and the same tracking mount. Both run the exact same Unistellar app for target selection, live-stacking, and post-processing. Both are managed as the same product line on Unistellar's support side. The Pro is not an updated Odyssey — it's the Odyssey plus one accessory that Unistellar chose to make non-removable.
That means for every claim you can make about optical performance — how it handles the Andromeda Galaxy, the Ring Nebula, the Whirlpool, the Moon, Saturn — the answer is the same on both scopes. What the Pro's eyepiece actually is
The Pro's headline feature isn't an optical eyepiece in the traditional sense. There's no light path from the primary mirror to your eye. It's a small, high-resolution OLED micro-display housed behind Nikon-designed viewing optics — you put your eye up to a rubber cup, and what you see is the sensor's live-stacked image, magnified to fill your view. Photons on your retina are OLED photons, not photons that traveled from the Ring Nebula.
Two things this does well. First, it gives you the feeling of using a telescope in a way the app on a phone or tablet cannot replicate — head down, eye to the cup, everything else dark. Star party culture and public outreach in particular benefit from this; handing a kid a phone screen and handing them an eyepiece are very different experiences even if the underlying image is identical. Second, at night the OLED is much easier on dark-adapted eyes than a bright phone screen; it dims well and doesn't wash out peripheral vision the way a tablet does when it's held near your face.
Two things it doesn't do. It doesn't give you optical resolution beyond what the sensor sees — you can't "push higher magnification" the way you can with a traditional eyepiece and a Barlow. And it doesn't take away the fact that the underlying scope is a stacking imager first; the eyepiece view updates as stacks complete, not as smoothly as looking through glass at photons in real time.
The decision
Buy the standard Odyssey if:
- You mostly plan to shoot targets and view the results on the app.
- You want the Unistellar optical package (which is very good) at the lowest price point Unistellar offers.
- You're primarily interested in astrophotography output, not the observational experience.
- The price gap could instead go toward a portable power station, a dew heater, or a trip to a dark sky site.
Buy the Odyssey Pro if:
- You'll actually sit next to the scope and use the eyepiece for at least half your sessions.
- You do public outreach, star parties, or share the scope with kids or guests where the physical eyepiece experience matters.
- You have the budget and the extra money is not the difference between buying and not buying.
- Dark-adaptation matters to you — the OLED is much better than a phone screen in this respect.
If you're on the fence, buy the standard Odyssey. It's easier to end up regretting the eyepiece you never used than to regret the eyepiece you don't have. Unistellar sells them side by side for a reason — the eyepiece is a real feature, but it isn't for everyone.
How this compares to the rest of the smart-telescope market
The Odyssey Pro is the only current smart telescope with an integrated eyepiece. The rest of the market — Seestar S30 Pro, Dwarf 3, Vespera 3, Celestron Origin Mark II — is app-only. Bottom line
There's no bad answer here. Both scopes deliver the same images. If you want the traditional "eye up to the scope" experience — for star parties, for outreach, for the sheer feel of the thing — the Pro is the only smart telescope that gives it to you, and Unistellar's execution of the OLED eyepiece is genuinely good. If you just want the pictures, save the ~$1,500 and buy the standard Odyssey. The extra money buys you an experience, not an image.
