DwarfLab now sells two smart telescopes that look surprisingly alike on paper — same 150mm focal length, same dual-lens layout, same equatorial tracking, same app, only $100 apart. The overlap makes the choice feel harder than it is. It isn't. Once you look at the sensor and the aperture instead of the price and the app screenshots, the two scopes are aimed at genuinely different buyers.

Buy the Dwarf 3 ($499) if you want the best image quality DwarfLab currently makes and you'll actually use the 8.3MP sensor by cropping, printing, or reprocessing in Siril. Buy the Dwarf Mini ($399) if 840 grams and one-handed setup matter more than pixel count — a bag-pocket scope for travel, backpacking, and cloudy-week impulse shooting.

Because they share a lens focal length and a control app, it's easy to assume the extra $100 buys you a slightly better version of the same experience. It doesn't. It buys you a different sensor, more aperture, and enough weight to make you think about which tripod you're packing. The sensor is the real story

The 2MP versus 8.3MP gap looks like a marketing number until you try to crop. The Mini's IMX662 outputs frames at roughly 1920 × 1080 — the resolution of a laptop screen. That's plenty for a phone share or a small print, and DwarfLab's larger 2.9 µm pixels do genuinely gather more light per pixel than the Dwarf 3's 2.0 µm ones, which helps sensitivity per subframe. Where it hurts is later: when you decide the moon looked bigger through the eyepiece than in the frame, you can't crop into a 2MP image very far before the pixels start showing.

The Dwarf 3's 8.3MP IMX678 (also Sony's STARVIS 2 line) is the reason Astronomy magazine's Dwarf 3 review singled out the sensor as its biggest post-processing lever, and it's why the same telephoto lens produces images that look meaningfully different between the two scopes on the same target. You can reframe in software, print larger, and pull more detail out of a stack in Siril or PixInsight. Whether you'll actually do that is the question the price tag is asking you.

The aperture math

Both scopes share a 150 mm focal length, so framing is identical — same object, same size in the frame. What differs is how much light lands on the sensor per second, which is set by aperture area. Dwarf 3 aperture area (π × 17.5²) is about 962 mm²; Dwarf Mini (π × 15²) is about 707 mm². The Dwarf 3 collects roughly 36% more light per unit time, which combines with its faster f/4.3 focal ratio (versus the Mini's f/5) to shorten integration on the same target — a decent Ring Nebula stack that takes 90 minutes on the Mini takes closer to an hour on the Dwarf 3, in round numbers.

This isn't a knockout — the Mini still gets there — but on faint deep-sky targets (galaxies, dim planetary nebulae, small emission structures) the Dwarf 3's advantage compounds over an evening. On the Moon, the Sun with the included filter, and bright wide-field targets (Andromeda's core, the Pleiades, brighter emission nebulae like the Lagoon), the two scopes' final images are much closer than the spec gap suggests.

Filters and post-processing

Both scopes ship with the same three filter concepts — a broadband/visible filter, a dark-frame filter, and a narrowband dual-band filter tuned for Ha/OIII emission (see our filters guide for what these actually do). The difference is mechanical: the Dwarf 3 uses a proper filter wheel you can trigger from the app between subs, while the Mini stacks its three filters as fixed built-ins that you select in software. In practice both feel similar to use, but the wheel is slightly more future-proof — DwarfLab could ship a new filter cartridge for the Dwarf 3, which they can't for the Mini's built-ins.

The 128 GB versus 64 GB storage split matters more than you'd think if you're a long-exposure imager who lets a scope run for a whole night — 64 GB fills up faster on 2MP frames than you'd guess, because dark and flat frames add up. If you plan to bring the scope out for multi-hour sessions and only offload once a week, that's a Dwarf 3 argument.

Portability: the Mini's whole point

840 grams is the pitch, and it's not marketing — the Mini is genuinely the lightest smart telescope on the market as of this writing, and it changes what you can do with it. Field trials from PetaPixel and other outlets converge on the same point: this is a scope you take to the summit, throw in a carry-on side pocket, or set up on a picnic table without a second thought.

The Dwarf 3 at 1.3 kg is also light by any pre-2024 standard — the Dwarf 3 review here makes the case for it as a travel scope. But 1.3 kg plus a decent travel tripod pushes you past the "throw it in the bag" threshold into "pack it deliberately." The Mini stays under it.

Who should buy which

Buy the Dwarf Mini if you're new to smart telescopes and want the cheapest current DwarfLab option; you travel often and weight is a real constraint; you're buying for a kid, a partner testing the hobby, or as a second scope for the trunk. The wide field of the 150 mm/f/5 combo is friendly to beginners because most bright targets fit without mosaics, and the fast setup means the scope will actually see use on a Tuesday. Buy the Dwarf 3 if you want the best image DwarfLab makes today; you're planning to process in Siril or PixInsight beyond the app; you own a filter wheel–capable rig already and want a scope that speaks the same language; or you want a scope you won't outgrow after two nebula seasons. The extra $100 is one of the highest-value upgrades in the current smart telescope market — the sensor jump alone is worth it if you'll actually use the resolution.

Our take

The interesting thing about this pairing is that neither scope is a compromise — they're both aimed at real buyers. The Mini is the answer to "how small can a smart telescope be and still work," and it's the honest answer. The Dwarf 3 is the answer to "what's the best sub-$500 sensor you can put on a smart telescope right now," and that's also honest. Which one is right for you comes down to whether you're optimizing for the bag or for the pixels.
